REVIEW - The Big Bang Theory S06E20 'The Tenure Turbulence'

Labels: , , , , ,

In the latest episode of The Big Bang Theory, ‘The Tenure Turbulence’, sparks fly as the guys compete for a recently opened tenured position at Caltech.

Kripke tells the guys that Professor Tupperman has died, leaving open a tenured position at the university. Leonard, Raj and Sheldon are all eligible for tenure, and Kripke tells them that Mrs Davis (Regina King, last seen in ‘The Egg Salad Equivalency’) is on the tenure committee.

Predictably, each guy tries to impress Mrs Davis: Leonard corners her at the gym and attempts to keep up with her during a workout; Raj sends her a long video detailing why he deserves tenure; and Sheldon gives her a (racially insensitive) gift. These scenes were all pretty awkward: we know these guys are supposed to be socially awkward geniuses, they needn’t keep laying it on so thick.

When they each find out what the other has been doing, they agree not to attend Professor Tupperman’s memorial to further schmooze the tenure committee. Of course they all end up going, with Leonard taking Penny to flirt with the committee members, and Amy coaching Sheldon on what is and is not appropriate to say. When they meet at the memorial they dissolve into an argument, but are stopped short when they see Mrs Davis enter with Kripke. They then all agree they don’t care which of them gets the position as long as it is not Kripke.

This episode may not have been the best of this season, but it has left the question of who will get tenure open for a later episode.
