Smallville Season 10 Episode 1

Smallville

The end of season nine saw the defeat of the Kandorians, and left us with the image of Smallville’s hero, Clark Kent (Tom Welling), falling from a rooftop. Clark’s miraculous survival is about as predictable as the ending of Titanic, however the identity of his saviour may surprise some viewers.

The premier episode of season ten also sports a glimpse of the return of one of Clark’s oldest nemesis’s. Some fans will groan, others will rejoice, but personally, I’m glad this super villain is back to rock Smallville.

During the episode, there are cheesy references to Kent’s “pride” and “vanity”. It’s frustrating, but classic heroes are nothing if not modest, and I feel that producers Alfred Gough Miles Millar are going to bring that out in this season.

At the end of the episode, Clark’s deceased father Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) makes a short appearance in order to warn Clark of an impending “darkness”. This new enemy is seen briefly in the final scene, hinting at a recurring nemesis for the season.

All in all, it’s a good opening episode, promising a variety of plot lines. It does still have an air of predictability about it, but after all, Smallville is the story of how Superman becomes the hero he is. We all know how it’s going to end, but it’s the journey that makes the story in this TV show.
