REVIEW - The Walking Dead - S03E12

Labels: , , ,

There is a striking air of familiarity to this latest episode. It is a stripped down, streamlined episode that, in more than one aspect, harks back to season one.

The focus is entirely on Rick, Carl and Michonne as they make a run back into Rick and Carl’s home town in search of supplies, guns and ammunition. The nature of storytelling on display refers back to the simplified nature of the first season that primarily revolved around Rick looking after his family.

There is also the much-anticipated return of a character that played a major part in shaping Rick. Whilst exploring the town, the group encounters Morgan, the man who saved Rick’s life way back in the pilot episode. His reappearance allows Rick to attain some form of resolution to that part of his life as he tries to repay his debt to Morgan and help him confront the realities of the world.

Carl is given the chance to develop and demonstrate how he is becoming a product of the environment that he now founds himself growing up in. A few of Michonne’s layers are also peeled back as she begins to show signs of becoming a fully-fledged member of Rick’s group.

Episodes like this, that feature just a few regular characters, can be hit and miss but this is without doubt one of the best episodes of the season and arguably one of the best in the series’ history. Credit must go to Scott M. Gimple who has delivered a terrific script.

This season continues to go from strength to strength and here’s hoping that it is a level that can be maintained with the season finale only a few episodes away.

March Madness - The Simpsons

Labels: , , ,

I am a huge fan of The Simpsons. For me, its not only one of the greatest comedy series ever made but also one of the greatest TV shows overall. I believe seasons 3-9 are pretty much untouchable in terms of comedy genius and that I can still watch episodes from that period and discover new jokes or a fresh perspective on a familiar joke.

It is fair to say the show’s quality dipped as it struggled to finds it place amongst a growing number of rival animated comedies. However, recents seasons have seen an improvement. With one glaring exception.

The episode “Lisa Goes GaGa” centres around the fact that Springfield is incredibly depressed and none more so than Lisa, who has just been voted the most unpopular student at school. Therefore, it falls to Lady GaGa to cheer up the city and teach Lisa the true meaning of happiness.

The Simpsons has always been noted for its guest stars and has featured appearances from some of the biggest names in the world such as Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and even former British prime minister Tony Blair. The show’s great skill has been how they have used their guest stars. Some have appeared as themselves, making brief appearances that serve a particular episode’s plot, while some have been let loose playing other characters such as the recurring genius of Kelsey Grammar as Sideshow Bob.

However, this is an episode constructed entirely around the presence of Lady GaGa with the plot being secondary. It is a self serving appearance featuring a number of gratuitous costume changes. It is a depressing sight to behold an episode of The Simpsons acting as what can only be described as a piece of propaganda for a flash in the pan pop star.

March Madness - The Carrie Diaries

Labels: , , ,

Sex and the City fans, you don’t have to suffer anymore! Your show hath returned in the form of a slightly more teen-fuelled Carrie. She’s younger, but still faaaabbulous and sexy – (but shhh, don’t say it cause she’s under-aged).

Or at least that’s what I would say if this show was, well, any of those things. The plug for this show had me going, I must admit. Having grown up on a steady diet of Sex and the City and pizza at girly sleepovers as a teen, I thought: ‘yes, another excuse to watch more junk food of the mind television that you hate to love, because really if you have an XX chromosone, it’s mandatory.’

However, this show turned out to be another lazy attempt to ride off the back of a good show that did well back in the day. Aside from the fact that 80’s fashion is kind of in right now, this show has nothing going for it. Teenagers will find it boring, because it’s not different or cutting edge like ‘Girls’ or ‘Skins’ and fans of ‘Sex and the City’ will find it boring because it’s too pre-menstrual – there’s just no sex. The characters are a bit too whiny and unrealistically naïve, making it all a bit after-school special.

Not too mention some basic stuff ups (this will show how much a hardcore Sex and the City fan I am), but in the show Carrie’s Mum has died and her Dad is still alive. But in ‘Sex and the City’ her Dad was the one who died when she was very young.

Then there’s the lazy and constant 80’s pop culture references, (Crowded House, Motley Crue, high-waisted jeans – it’s the 80’s we swear!).

This show is just one example in a long-standing fight against original programming and the plight to insult viewers with blatant numbers-hungry television.

March Madness - South Park: Eek a Penis!

Labels: , , ,

In a series like South Park, Mr Garrison's sex change was bound to be reversed: The man changes sexualities at the drop of the hat.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit sore the moral of 'Mr Garrison's Fancy New Vagina' was being ignored this episode, but South Park is supposed to be offensive. My views are supposed to be challenged in fresh, exciting ways. Maybe Garrison was just faking being happy bdcause he had no choice.

The problem is that it's also supposed to be funny.

I wish I could say I laughed at 'Eek, A Penis!' but I don't think I laughed once. I got bored watching a mouse with the titular appendage making women scream after the second time. I didn't laugh at the duet. I didn't even laugh at the insanely offensive punchline.

It could be age getting to me, but I just feel that this episode was so weak compared to every other episode.
